| In conjunction with the upcoming Red Stick International Animation Festival April 21-23, the finalists for the first-ever Red Stick Animation Awards have been announced. Award winners will receive a red, baton-like trophy and will have their entries shown at the festival. Activities of the festival will include film screenings, workshops and lectures from leading animators in the entertainment industry. The festival is free and open to the public and will be one of the many events that are reshaping the Baton Rouge Downtown Arts District. It will be one of the first events held at the newly opened Shaw Center for the Arts. The Old State Capitol and the Louisiana Art and Science Museum will also host festival activities. The finalists’ entries represent a worldwide sampling of professional and student applicants in the categories of 2D Animation, 3D Animation, Experimental/Abstract Animation, and Animation for Games. Finalists in the professional category of 2D Animation are: “Safe Heavens,” directed by Seed Animation Studio Ltd.; “Timmy’s Lesson in Nature,” directed by Mark Simon and Travis Blaise; “Dirge of Love,” directed by Ya-Ting Gray; “Cat,” directed by Bu Hua; and “Top Shelf,” directed by Marta Tesoro. Student finalists are: “Past Whispers,” directed by Brett Rutland; “Graveshift,” directed by Arie Stavchansky; and “The Turn-off,” directed by Holly Klein. Finalists in the professional category of 3D Animation are: “Robot Jazz,” directed by Dmitri Mangiagalli; “Sandstorm,” directed by Yeon Chio; “Fish and Lotus,” directed by Lu Haiyan and Zhang Zhiyi; “The Flying Jar,” directed by Zhou Xu; and “Reon,” directed by Jung Chi Gwang. Students finalists are: “Specidemons,” directed by Jeffery Scheetz; “Chohon,” directed by Jun Sang Yoon; “Herr Blumfisch Explodiert,” directed by Mathias Schreck and Mark Hotz; “Anne & Boo,” directed by Johannes Weiland; and “Dragon Slayer,” directed by Robert Kuczerua. Finalists in the professional category of Experimental Animation are: “Amazilia,” directed by Brian Evans; “Copper Islands,” directed by Kristine Burns; “Limosa,” directed by Brian Evans; “Today is Tomorrow,” directed by John Burns; “Aerial,” directed by James S. Hegarty; “Space Junk,” directed by John Burns; and “The Thief,” directed by Yeon Choi. Student finalists are: “Poporo,” directed by Luis Cantillo; “O,” directed by Keum-Taek Jung; and “Urbanlandscape,” directed by Alex Chung. The finalist for the Animation for Games category is “Killzone,” directed by Graham McKenna and Jan-bart Van Beek.
