| LSU’s Center for GeoInformatics and Louisiana Spatial Reference Center are joining with several state agencies to present GeoExpo 2005 on Wednesday, May 11, from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Galvez Conference Center at 602 N. Fifth Street in downtown Baton Rouge. Media are invited to attend. Geographic information technology has become increasingly important to state agencies, such as LSU and the Department of Transportation and Development, and geospatial data have become essential in homeland security efforts, emergency preparedness, economic development, environmental management and education. The goal of GeoExpo 2005 is to expose the public to the importance, products and value of this technology. GeoExpo 2005 will be a “one-stop resource” for the public to access and learn about the high-tech geographic information and data available from Louisiana governmental agencies and private-sector sponsors. There will be booths at which visitors can meet Geographic Information Systems staff members from the various agency and organization participants and learn more about geospatial data that are available from each agency. There will also be a “theater” area that will host live presentations about GIS success stories and how the participating agencies can play a valuable role in Louisiana’s economic development, health-care initiatives and coastal issues. Agencies participating in GeoExpo 2005 include the Louisiana Department of Natural Resources, Division of Administration, Department of Environmental Quality, Department of Transportation and Development, Department of Labor, Department of Social Services, Louisiana Oil Spill Coordinators Office and GSI and mapping software firm ESRI.
